Including previously released singles ''New Light'', ''Carry Me Away'' and ''I Guess I Just Feel Like'', the new 10 song LP called Sob Rock is set to be released on July 16th 2021. Mayer announced the release date along with the name and tracklist of the album on the same day that he shared his latest single, ''Last Train Home'', which features Maren Morris.

While Sob Rock has just recently been officially announced, the album has been for some time – mainly on Mayer’s newly founded TikTok account. He said directly in a video posted to the platform: “My album is recorded, mixed and mastered. I’ve just been chilling and sharing it with friends for the past couple of months.”

Back in March, Mayer announced that the album was "recorded, mixed and mastered" and that he's just been "chilling and sharing it with friends for the past couple of months."

Mayer is going for a vibe here, and so far, having heard about six seconds of music, I can tell you he’s nailing it. First, let’s address that album cover. (Above.)

John Mayer is right on time with his latest release, "Last Train Home."

The veteran singer, songwriter and guitarist hinted at a new release on social media, and he didn’t disappoint.

It straddles the line between '80s parody and homage, which the cover also does, reaching for a “Miami Vice” and peak Richard Marx vibe. The guitar work is Mayer at his best, throwing out gorgeous understated fireworks, but too many of their vehicles are unimpressive. “Sob Rock” often sounds like warmed-over yacht rock.

Initially, Mayer claimed that the album was to be released in mid-April 2021. However he later announced the delay of the record to July 16. It was recorded between late 2017 and early 2021. Mayer released "Last Train Home" as a single on June 4, 2021. Before that, clips of the track were released onto Mayer's TikTok account in late March 2021.
